Who was Jay Dahl?

Jay Steven Dahl was a left-handed pitcher, born in San Bernardino, California, on December 6, 1945. The Houston Colt .45s signed him in June 1963, straight out of high school.

On September 27, 1963, at 17, he started against the New York Mets at Colt Stadium. Houston used a starting lineup made up entirely of rookies that night. It was Dahl's only major league game. He is the most recent 17-year-old to appear in one, according to Baseball-Reference's Bullpen.

Dahl died in a car crash in June 1965, at 19.

The hunt for his autograph

Collectors consider Jay Dahl's autograph one of the rarest in baseball. We have scoured the internet for it. So far we have found one fake and seen two genuine examples. We have also bought yearbooks hoping to find his signature in one, so far without luck.

If you have a Jay Dahl autograph, know where one is, or have a lead on a yearbook, school record, or family connection, please email astrosatoz@gmail.com.
